San Francisco Entertainment
San Francisco is a favorite destination for travelers from all over the world. With a myriad of parks, museums, shops, activities and breath-taking views, there is plenty to see and do for every member of the family.
Castro District
The Castro Theater is a 1930s movie palace that still features a Wurlitzer organ. It is internationally know today for combining the elegance of a bygone era with all the Modern technical improvements and comforts of the current time.
Chinatown
The Pacific Heritage Museum, 608 Commercial Street, displays select exhibits of art of the Pacific Rim on a rotating basis.
The Chinese Culture Center, 750 Kearny Street, has exhibits of Chinese and Chinese American art, history and culture.
Fisherman?s Wharf
San Francisco?s most visited neighborhood is Fisherman?s Wharf - with its restaurants, shopping, hotels, and entertainment all within walking distance. At one end of The Wharf is Pier 39, a favorite place with two levels of restaurants and specialty shops. At the other end is the Aquatic Park. The famous Ghiradelli Chocolate Store is the highlight of this popular former chocolate factory- turned-shopping center. The Square has three levels of shop and restaurants.
Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island was used as a military fortification in the 1850?s, an incarceration facility for Spanish-American War prisioners, and a federal maximum-security prison from 1934 to 1963. ?The Rock? is now a popular visitor destination and is open every day of the year except Christmas Day and New Year?s Day. Tickets can be booked online.
Golden Gate Park District
The Golden Gate Park is the largest park in San Francisco. It is about 3 miles long and ? -mile wide and has nine lakes within its borders. Going north on Park Presidio to Highway 101 leads to the Golden Gate Bridge, a world recognized visitor attraction. The 1.7 mile-long suspension bridge links San Francisco with Marin County and can be crossed by car, bicycle or on foot.
Fifty-five acres of the Golden Gate Park is dedicated to the Strybing Arboretum & Botanical Gardens which has over 7,000 different species of plants from around the world.
The Asian art Museum is one of the largest museums in the North America devoted exclusively to Asian art.
The San Francisco Zoo is Northern California?s largest zoological park and conservation center. Along with 250 different animal species in natural surroundings, the zoo has recently added the new Lipman Family Lemur Forest along with the restoration of the famed Dentzel Carousel.
The Japanese Tea Garden is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States and is an excellent example of what is known as a wet walking garden.
Marina District
The Palace of Fine Arts is home to the Exploratorium, a hands-on science Museum.
Mission District
Mission Delores at 16th and Delores Streets is the oldest structure in San Francisco.
Cinco De Mayo and Carnaval, celebrated in May, are the city?s version of Mardi Gras
North Beach, Nob Hill, Telegraph Hill, & Russian Hill
Things you don?t want to miss in these neighborhoods are:
Lombard Street ? ?the crookedist Street in the World? on Russian Hill;
Grace Cathedral; and Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill with its beautiful views of the city and
murals. The Cable Car Museum is also located on Nob Hill.
Pacific Heights
The Spreckels Mansion at 2080 Washington Street and the Whittier Mansion at 2090 Jackson Street are both of historical and architectural interest.
The Fillmore Street Jazz Festival is held every year in July.
